Perhaps the most radical change in the new R 1300 GS is the switch to a frame constructed from steel sheet instead of traditional tubes. According to BMW, this "shell-shaped" frame offers greater rigidity and also allows for a more compact design, while the new aluminum rear subframe is bolted on instead of the old tubular steel element. Up front, a new Evo Telelever suspension system promises greater stability and steering precision, while at the rear, the Evo Paralever is longer and reportedly stiffer than the non-Evo Paralever of the R 1250 GS.

MOTOR

The new design of the twin-cylinder boxer engine, with a bore of 106.5 mm (compared to the 1250's 102.5 mm pistons) and a shorter stroke of 73 mm (compared to 76 mm), makes it the most square engine to date. The intake valves have increased from 40 mm to 44 mm, and the exhaust valves from 34 mm to 35.6 mm. The compression ratio has also increased from 12.5:1 to 13.3:1. The maximum power has increased from 134 hp to 143 hp, making it the most powerful production boxer engine, while the maximum torque has increased from 142 Nm to 149 Nm, with a minimum of 128 Nm available from 3,600 rpm to 7,800 rpm.

Highlights

BMW has designed the Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) for a smooth ride, and it certainly delivers. In Road mode, the ride is extraordinarily comfortable, yet miraculously controlled. There is more suspension movement, and you can feel the EVO Paralever and EVO Telelever suspensions working their magic. On the highway, it feels like riding on a magic carpet. Braking is handled by new BMW four-piston radial-mounted calipers at the front, connected via standard integral ABS Pro, and the rear pedal also activates the front brake and vice versa. The amount of brake applied forward from the rear depends on the active riding mode and other live data collected by the system.
